What Manner of Man?

"Ironically, a flawed electoral process appears to have brought to power a man of integrity. "

The US State Dept, Aug 1, 2007

Mirrors my thoughts exactly.

I suspect President Umaru Yar'adua may turn out to be just what the doctor recommended.

I certainly hope so. The man makes me feel SO good as a Nigerian. SO good. For once, I actually feel a certain fondness for my President - a certain faith in him...

I hate to be cynical but it really is too early to judge. Go back to history and read the first 100 days of IBB, Abacha and even Obasanjo and you will re-read the praises heaped on them. Sadly, they all failed us. You dont judge how a man performs in a 400metres race by how he performs at the beginning of the race!

@anon,
we're free to be cynical. in fact, we should be. However, I DO see a difference with Yar'adua. I cant say I remember with IBB, but I know that from the moment OBJ got into the seat, he was distrusted. There was nothing to make us warm up to him. The vibe here is so different, let's confess it. And yes, you cannot jusdge a man in a 400 metre race too hastily but you can at least have pointers to how har he would go from the texture of his warm-up!

@nilla,
where hast thou been!??lo. Yeah, we just have to keep watching...

Nigerians and singing early praises na wa. In his first few months, what exactly has he accomplished? Other than electing ministers who are (self admittedly) incompetent. Integrity is not all Nigeria needs in a leader

@ kpakpando
Some Nigerians and reflex knee-jerk criticisms na wa. If you see only his 'electing incompetent' ministers sans other such actions as released the long-awaited Lagos LG Funds, suspending disruptive increase in petroleum price products for a year, getting undergraduate students back to school after months of a debilitating strike action, sorting out the NYSC mess immediately, facing the Ogun-Lagos road project with a hitherto lacking zest, putting in motion the reversal of the shady sale of the refineries, releasing monitored funds for other specified major roads asap, reducing drastically the volume of governmental 'aides', etc etc as having done nothing - then I am at a loss for words.

This man, unlike Obasanjo, has started on the right path. I CHOOSE to hope, not in a vacuum, but based on the direction he has taken.

But then that doesnt mean you shouldnt hold on to your cynicism - all Nigerians have earned that right - but at the least let's try and make it informed.

How u dey?

Haha nice one, this is Nigeria after all, when we still do things like hire people, and then tell them what their job will be aka our flawed way of choosing the cabinet. Wouldnt it have been best for senate to have screened them for their respective position.
But yeah homie Y seems like he has some good stuff maybe? lets watch and see
